BVG Awesome Suppliers: Introducing Upendo Images

Bride Vs Groom Awesome Suppliers:

Today we’re delighted to introduce you to another of our Bride Vs Groom awesome suppliers, the fantastic wedding photographer Bhavna from Upendo Images.

Bhavna is not only a great photographer but is one of the most genuinely lovely people we’ve had the pleasure to have met. She’s the kind of a person who would send you a card just because it’s nice to get something other than bills in the mail (true story) and having had the (albeit sadly brief) opportunity to be photographed by her we can tell you first hand how relaxed Bhavna makes you feel in front of the camera and how instantly you can’t help but befriend and trust her, a quality that shows immediately in her fab photographs!

You can find out more about Bhavna’s beautiful work on our Find-A-Supplier page, but first let’s introduce you to the lady herself! We know you’re going to hit it off so make sure you take advantage of the fantastic discount Bhavna has kindly offered exclusively to Bride Vs Groom readers! Over to Bhavna to tell you a little bit more about Upendo Images…

Tell us a little about yourself, how did you get started in wedding photography and what inspired you?

I’m Bhavna, a hippy happy kind of person, born in the beautful city of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. mow residing in York. A typical 80’s child, with a love for cheesy music, Formula 1 racing, all things polka dotty and a good cuppa chaa. Upendo Images, is a fairly new wedding photography business, based in the outskirts of York, offering alternative, Indian & Asian wedding photography, combining the traditional with the contemporary. You could say it’s a bit like gulab jamun with icecream! (Ooh I do love gulab jamuns). If you’ve not tried gulab jamuns yet, try them at a visit to your local Indian restaurant  :)

Photography is my passion, sounds a bit cliché right? But it really is. I get giddy with excitement before a pre-wed or a wedding because I know I’ll be out doing what I love and then I look forward to showing the couples the stunning images, the smile it brings on their faces, brings with it a sense of fulfilment.

How long have you been photographing weddings for?

Just over three years but less than a year as a full time photographer.

Whatʼs your style of wedding photography? What defines you as a photographer?

I thrive at providing a relaxed and fun environment for my couples, bringing out the best in them, getting to know them and their families and ensuring I capture the day perfectly for them. I’m known for joining in with the dancing and have a laugh with the couple and their guests.

Whatʼs your approach on the wedding day?

I like to start my day with a cuppa chaa with the bride if I can, before the chaos starts. It helps in creating a slightly relaxed atmosphere. I would then proceed to photograph the surroundings and details. My favourite part of the day is the bride getting ready, there is so much excitement and nervousness at the same time, it makes for some interesting portraits. During the ceremony I will focus on the couple and their immediate family, espeically at large Asian weddings where this is a requirement. After the ceremony, I ask the couples to allow for at least 30 minutes for couple portraits and another 30 minutes for group shots. I’ll then proceed to take photos of the rest of the evening as it progresses, including speeches, cake cutting, first dance and so on.I also like to push the boundaries and encourage myself to get the images I want, I therefore try and do something different at each wedding, time permitting.

Whatʼs your biggest achievement so far in your career?

I’m super excited that this year I have been asked to photograph a beautiful couple all the way in Toronto, Canada. I would say this is my biggest achievement to date in my photography career.

What advice would you give to a couple when choosing their wedding photographer?
There are plenty of good photographers around, but you should go with the photographer who you feel most comfortable with, if you click with them when you meet them, the likelyhood is you’ll be happy with them capturing your day. Of course make sure you have seen a few full weddings so you know if you like their work too, but don’t base your decision solely on this or the price.
Could you give us a little more detail about your packages?

I have one simple full day package that starts at £1500, this includes getting ready to all the dancing.

The package includes a pre-wed shoot, a slideshow of images, final edited images on a USB and an online password protected gallery.

Albums are priced separately and start at £475.

I’d like to offer a 10% discount for Bride Vs Groom readers – please quote Bride Vs Groom when enquiring/booking.

What are your favourite 3 photographs you have taken and why?

Photography by Upendo ImagesI love this image of Cherene & Ashish taken at West Kirby Beach, it tells you so much about them as a couple and it was lots of fun to capture too.

E-shoots Upendo ImagesOne of the things I love most about weddings and pre-wed shoots is the ‘LOVE’ that oozes from the couples who are about to commit to each other for a lifetime of friendship. This image of Debbie & Matthew, shows such immense emotion in a simple embrace. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.

Wedding Photography by Upendo ImagesThe calm before the chaos. This image of Artie getting ready is a recent favourite. Just moments after this image was taken, the bridesmaids came bursting into the room and the happy chaos began:)

What piece of advice would you give to couples when planning their wedding day?
Make sure you enjoy your day! It passes too quickly. Don’t worry about the meal running late or the guests sitting at the wrong tables. Take a moment to look at each other and remember why you’re there in the first place, take time to cherish the commitment you’ve just made for a lifetime of togetherness and then dance the night away with your favourite people around you.

Whatʼs your favourite thing about being a wedding photographer?
I love being around people in love and around families, and I quite like the chaos of a wedding, it ‘s a happy chaos, it brings back fond memories of my large family unit in Tanzania. It’s a journey that I feel privileged to be part of.
