And so it’s valentines day once again (cue sound of panicked grooms scrambling to find a card): it’s the day for gestures of love, stories of romance and, I daresay, the time for many a special proposal! So at this special time of year we wondered what we should share with you: a beautiful loving wedding? More proposal stories? Tales of true romance? Nah… we thought we’d tell you about our epic valentines day FAILURES!!
We’ve been together since we were teenagers. We’ve shared many a valentine together but (much like my eventual proposal) things never quite seem to go to plan…
2002 – I had planned on doing something nice for Dom until she informed me that she didn’t believe in valentines and that it was just a made up day designed by the card-makers. My mistake, it would appear, was in believing her. Having organised nothing and not bought a card or present it was Valentines day in the doghouse for me!
2003 – Matt and I had briefly split up just before valentines and got back together not long after…guess he dodged a bullet there!!
2004 – Dom went to university in Sunderland whilst I was based in Edinburgh leaving us in a difficult long-distance relationship. For reasons I forget we couldn’t see each other on valentines so I tried to send her flowers. The delivery person couldn’t find her address and in the end I had to persuade her long suffering room-mate to pick them up for me…the next day!! After having to explain the situation to an upset Dom the surprise kind of lost its impact!
2005 – Much to my disappointment Matt had told me he was having to work valentines day in Edinburgh and so, resigned to not seeing him, I had planned to join my friends on an anti-valentines girly night out. Little did I know that actually Matt had planned on surprising me! Apparently he turned up at my door to find no-one home and my phone switched off. By the time I got back and found him freezing on the doorstep I was so drunk I immediately fell asleep and he had to catch an early train in the morning before I even woke up!
2006 – By this point I was working in the events field and was forced to spend February 14th running tech for a valentines event for hundreds of loving couples whilst receiving disappointed text messages from Dom. Painful!
2007 – A lovely day of romance and love…for the couple whose wedding I was photographing! Not so much for me and Matt!
2008 – Finally we’d got it together: I had planned to go for a nice romantic walk in one of Dom’s favourite places and then we’d go for dinner at a fantastic (and expensive) restaurant. It absolutely chucked it down, the restaurant had lost our reservation, everywhere else was booked up and we couldn’t get a taxi home so had to walk back in the rain!
2009 – Matt had planned various surprises for me in the morning: before he had to leave for work he’d got up early, left a nice breakfast for me while I slept then gone to my studio and left a huge bouquet of flowers outside for me to find. As it worked out I overslept and didn’t even see the breakfast as I rushed out, and I wasn’t working at the studio that day so didn’t get the flowers!
2010 – I finally succeeded in getting flowers delivered to Dom at work, although due to problems finding the address AGAIN they didn’t get there till well into the afternoon! For when she finished work I had bought hundreds of candles and some champagne and decorated the whole flat. I waited there for her to finish work… and waited… and waited… she eventually got back about 11pm by which point I was in a pretty bad mood!
2011 – It finally looked like we were going to have a proper romantic valentines day. We’d had a nice day together and Matt had booked a really nice restaurant to finish it off. It was all going great until I had some sort of allergic reaction to the food and had to ask Matt to take me home! I spent the rest of the evening lying down clutching a hot water bottle and feeling pretty terrible!!
And so that brings us to today, and who knows what disasters may befall us! I suspect we’re about due a major accident so we’re thinking of dining out somewhere near A&E! We’d love to hear about any funny valentines stories you’ve experienced so if you have any you’d like to share please get in touch either via the comments section below or via email on bridevsgroomsubmissions@gmail.
Here’s wishing you all a very Happy (and less disastrous!) Valentines!
