Because Weddings are F*ing Awesome

The wedding season is well and truly upon us once again. It always strikes me as odd that we can define a wedding ‘season’ as surely people are getting married all the time, but it does seem that the majority do occur over the spring and summer months, after which I’m pleased to say that the transfer window definitely does NOT open, but the players do tend to take a little break. Anyway, now the season has once again kicked off I’ve been reminded of why I love being involved in the happiest day of two people’s lives.

The thing about weddings is that they’re all about emotion. On the day the bride, groom, family and guests alike go through a roller-coaster of emotions from the incredibly nervous to the completely overjoyed, and it’s always special to be a part of. When filming a wedding I have the chance to experience all of that up close through the camera, and by the end of the day, having witnessed such a personal and incredibly sentimental moment in this couple and all their loved ones’ lives, you can’t help but feel that you really know these two people that you’ve only so recently met.

Everyone of course wants their wedding to be spectacular, to be unique and memorable for everyone in attendance. But having now been involved with so many weddings the thing that’s become very clear to me is that all the ‘stuff’ really doesn’t matter. Sure the table layouts might look pretty, ok I do get excited when a fish & chip van turns up (though that’s true of any situation, not just weddings!) but actually what makes a wedding are the people who are there. The characters that come out, the electric atmosphere as the band strike up that first tune, the smiles and pure positivity that a wedding creates is an incredible thing, and in a world where our outlook is so often pessimistic it’s refreshing to be involved in an occasion where negativity is completely off the menu. A wedding is a day full of hope and a true celebration of the really important things in life: love and friendship. Things may go wrong but nobody will care; it’s not about impressing people, it’s not about making the right impression or getting things right or wrong, it’s about enjoying yourself and being with people you love. It’s a day where you can forget about any of life’s problems and simply be happy.

Of course in the build-up planning the day can be very stressful as well as financially stretching, but when you’re talking to suppliers and looking at venues it’s different from any other business transaction you’re generally likely to make. Yes you’re paying them for a service, but it’s not a business related decision, it’s an emotional one. You’re buying into more than just a service, you’re finding someone you can trust to help you to create something truly momentous in your lives, and with that comes a huge sense of trust and friendship.

So if you’re getting tired and stressed about your wedding day or getting worried about cost, or if you work in the industry and have found yourself complaining about this, that and the other and forgetting why we do it, just remember this:

Quite simply: weddings are F*ing awesome.
