The Friday Fight-Out: The Dress – Classic Vs Quirky

With the acquisition of some accessories for my groomsmen and most of my outfit too Operation Have Something to Wear for the Wedding is well underway! The only major problem I had was finding clothes to go with a dress that I know absolutely nothing about! In fact so tight lipped is Dom on the subject that it’s only by the clothes she was suggesting for me that I’m starting to get an inkling that her own dress might not be overly traditional… but even then is it REALLY quirky or just a little bit of a twist on a classic dress? Or does she want to wear something quite traditional herself whilst the rest of us have something more unusual??? The fact is I just don’t know, so this post comes with the following disclaimer:

OPINIONS RENDERED ON TRADITIONAL AND NON TRADITIONAL WEDDING DRESSES ARE PURELY FOR PURPOSES OF DEBATE AND DO NOT NECESSARILY REPRESENT THE OPINIONS OF THE DEBATERS… IS DEBATERS A WORD?? WELL SPELLCHECK DOESN’T SEEM TO MIND IT… OH LOOK AT THAT, IT’S A REAL NOUN, IT JUST SOUNDS WRO… I DIGRESS.

That ought to cover it! So Shaw, no getting annoyed if I’m arguing the wrong way ok! Agreed?

Dom: We’re not allowed to agree on this post remember!

Bugger.

Oh well, if in doubt… FIGHT!!!

In the Red Corner, representing the Traditional Wedding Dress… well that’s thrown me a curb ball already! She likes nothing more than throwing me off the scent and leaving me utterly befuddled, it’s Dom “The Evil Tog” Bride

In the Blue Corner, representing something a little more quirky although he really loves traditional dresses as well and would be just as happy if his own bride were to wear that… oh god I can’t win this can I! It’s Matt “The This Week Particularly Gormless” Groom

Traditional Vs Quirky: Let Battle Commence!

FRIDAY-FIGHT-OUT!

Dom: Your wedding is the day that you are supposed to look at your most beautiful, to look like a princess, to wear something you will never wear again or in any other situation. The traditional white dress is simply perfect for the task!

Matt: But you really can only wear the dress once. If you’re going to spend a fortune on a dress isn’t it quite nice if you can wear it again on some future special occasion (your wedding anniversary perhaps?) and remember your wedding day as you wear it rather than leave your dress in the attic getting attacked by moths?

Dom: I think for most people the dress is something they do want to just cherish and wouldn’t want to wear again. Either that or they do wear it one more time for a cool trash the dress photo shoot! Anyway traditional dresses don’t necessarily have to be that expensive, it all depends on the bride’s tastes!

Matt: That’s not what you told me when you were seeking out the most expensive dresses in the world! Anyway traditional dresses are great for a traditional wedding, but in recent years the trend has been towards more unusual weddings… vintage styles, bohemian styles, casual weddings that are supposed to be fun rather than elegant… the dress should match the occasion and a less traditional wedding demands a more quirky wedding dress.

Dom: A traditional white dress is ALWAYS acceptable for the bride whatever style the wedding is! She’s the star of the show and should stand out from everyone else looking as glamorous as possible. The traditional white dress definitely has the wow factor!!

Matt: But other dresses can have that wow factor too! You could get the sort of dress models might wear down the catwalk for similar money to a traditional dress which might be even more extraordinary and every bit as glamorous. You EXPECT the bride to be wearing white so in many ways it’s more exciting when she chooses something a bit different!

Dom: The classic white dress is steeped in all kinds of tradition and there’s something special about wearing that special type of dress that so many brides have worn on their own most important day. You can also guarantee that a classic wedding dress will never really go out of style which can’t be said for many other dresses! You don’t want to look back on your wedding pictures in years to come and ask yourself “what the heck was I thinking?!”

Matt: A bride in a quirky dress is just… cool! Doing something a little unusual keeps it fresh for the guests and looks really stylish in the wedding pics. Fashion doesn;t really matter when it comes to the dress, you will always look back at those pictures fondly.

FINAL REMARKS

Dom: The classic wedding dress has been the adopted style for generations. It’s steeped in tradition and always looks elegant whilst making the bride look the most beautiful she will ever look. It’s designed to help make an incredible entrance and is completely different from anything you will ever wear again. The classic dress, simply put, is just something really special.

Matt: You’ve gone and got a classic dress haven’t you!!! I take it back, I love classic dresses they’re great, my favouri… my JOINT favourite. Oh let’s face it, whatever you wear you’re going to look stunning and as long as your groom likes it you’re always onto a winner!
