The Top 10 Wedding Movies

Bride Vs Groom, Wedding BlogSo the other day Dom made me sit down with her and watch the Sex in the City Movie. It was painful, I’m not going to lie and considering this was supposed to be my break from wedding planning it seemed to spend a lot of it’s time talking about weddings…relentlessly. So rather than actually watch it I started thinking: what are the top 10 wedding related films ever made? And would our lists differ at all?

(Cue top of the pops music)

Bride Vs Groom, Wedding Blog

10:

Dom-  At ten, down ten and up ten it’s a non-moving new-entry, Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds star in The Proposal. Crap…utter crap but strangely entertaining!

Matt- It’s that all time classic wedding movie, based entirely around weddings and nothing else honest it’s… SHREK! Shrek and Princess Fiona live happily ever after THE END. Until the inevitable sequel of course!

9:

Dom- Father of the Bride. Classic Steve Martin as the father that spends most of his time worrying how much the wedding’s costing…remind you of anyone?

Matt – On Her Majesty’s Secret Service Bond finally ties the knot before his new bride is of course shot in, as I recall, strangely simple circumstances, no sharks with lasers on their heads or anything! Though they did get buried in an avalanche earlier in the story… The name’s Bond…briefly!

8:

Dom – The Philadelphia Story / High Society The original 1940 film adaptation of the Broadway Classic Philadelphia Story features a cast including Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart. The 1956 remake High Society starred Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly and even features Louis Armstrong… they don’t get more star studded than that!

Matt – Wayne’s World 2 – Shwiiiiiiiiing!! Wayne and Garth return to organise a rock concert and Wayne must stop Cassandra from marrying evil record producer guy… We’re not worthy, we’re not worthy!!

7:

Dom: Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore star in cult classic comedy The Wedding Singer – Gotta love those singing grannies!

Matt: That classic Rom-Com wedding based caper Mission Impossible 3. Clue’s in the title: Mission Impossible: it’s all about the wedding planning!

6:

My Best Friend’s Wedding – Julia Roberts becomes Cameron Diaz’s best friend but realises they’re both in love with the same Man. Great fun, particularly the scene where the whole restaurant starts singing!

Matt: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – Indy finally settles down and marries an Alien. Oh actually it might be Marion he marries but there’s definitely aliens. WHY LUCAS WHY??

5:

Dom: Mamma Mia – The 2008 smash hit Abba musical takes place as a young woman is about to get married. But just who is her real father and will any of them ever learn how to sing? Thought-provoking stuff!

Matt: So I Married an Axe Murderer – Says it all really.

4:

Dom: Bridesmaids – One of the biggest hits of 2011 it’s the women’s answer to another recent classic The Hangover. Both hilarious films!

Matt: Star Wars: Attack of the Clones – Yes that’s right, Attack of the Clones has finally made it into the top five of a chart that isn’t called “The top six Star Wars Films”. Can’t remember what the hell it was about so it must have been the wedding!

3.

Dom: Bride Wars. Two weddings, one date. Two best friends become staunch enemies as their weddings get booked for the same day. A Bridal fight to the death – just the kind of thing we like on Bride Vs Groom!

Matt: The Doc marries his beloved Clara in Back to the Future 3! Ok maybe we don’t actually see the wedding as such but Back to the Future should always be in the top three of any film chart. FACT.

2.

Dom: My Big Fat Greek Wedding. In 2002 this small independent movie became the highest grossing Romantic Comedy in history. Toula’s father wants nothing more than for her to meet a nice Greek boy and get married, but Toula herself has other ideas…

Matt: The Godfather. “No sicilian can refuse a request on his daughter’s wedding day.” Best. Film. Ever. and there’s a wedding in there somewhere!

1.

And so here it is, the number 1 wedding film ever made according to us is… (if you could hum some suspenseful music here that would be much appreciated)…

Dom: Four Weddings and a Funeral. There’s FOUR weddings… TOP TRUMP! Brilliant film and probably the ultimate British Romantic Comedy, despite Andie MacDowell’s performance!!

Matt: Well, I think we all know the obvious wedding-based film that’s missing from this list. I thought Dom would say it but it looks like it’s left to me to represent the true greatest wedding-based film of all time. It is of course….Kill Bill. Tarantino’s masterpiece does have the odd moment of violence just to balance out the love in the air but overall a wedding film…definitely a wedding film.

So there you have it: The Bride Vs Groom top 10 wedding movies 2012, and if I do say so myself probably the best critical film guide out there right now! Move over Winkleman, Film 2012 here we come!!

If you disagree with any of our choices or would like to offer some more films up for the list then catch us on Twitter or leave a comment below! I can’t imagine there’ll be any disagreement though, comprehensive I felt!
