When it comes to your wedding ceremony it’s sometimes difficult to work out what should be said. You have the choice of course to write your own vows which is an absolutely beautiful thing, but with something so important it’s incredibly difficult to get right, and even more nerve-wracking to actually say on the day! But having that personal touch as part of your ceremony is so special and emotive, and the vows are not the only place you can work in something you’ve written especially for your partner.
When it came to our own civil ceremony little did I know that Matt had something planned himself! He’d written a special reading just for me, and after a lot of persuasion (well actually a tea-based bribe and a night off from writing) he agreed to let me share it! So, if you’re thinking about your reading why not think about writing something yourself! I promise you it definitely adds an extra dimension to the wedding!
Here goes…
The Meaning of Wife
by Matt Thompson
I promise,
To make you laugh when you’re down
Wipe your tears when you frown
All I ask in return is your love
(And a cup of tea)
I will be there by your side
Come along for the ride
All I ask in return is your love
(And a cup of tea)
I swear to be faithful
To be honest, to be grateful
All I ask in return is your love
(And a cup of tea)
I’ll give you hugs when unwell
Being your punchbag’s no hard sell
All I ask in return is your love
(Actually make it a pot)
I will put down my life
To save yours in a fight
All I ask in return is your love
(And maybe a teacake would be nice as well)
When you ask to be alone
I will wait and then atone
All I ask in return is your love
(Have you even put the kettle on yet?)
Under duvets I will swelter
When you’re cold and need shelter
All I ask in return is your love
(Look you put the teabags in the pot like this…)
And at the end of the day
One thing shall never sway
For all time you will have all my love
Here, I’ve made you a cup of tea.
